Good news and bad

If you're a regular reader, you may have read "The Un-named TF2 Story" post. If you haven't, give it a read here because this post is an update of that one with a larger explanation than I originally thought.

The decision has been made as to whether or not I should upload the TF2 story to Machinima.com. However the decision didn't come in the thinking perspective I originally had in mind. The decision had actually come to me after I had sat down and did a bit of research. I'm rather surprised at myself that I didn't know of this information sooner, but at least I discovered it before I had gotten any work done on the project.

You see, for a long time I thought Valve had a large support for it's machinima community. I thought this due to the massive flexibility of the Source engine, what with Garry's Mod, Source SDK Faceposer, even the quickly popular "Source filmmaker" seemed like much support in a non-verbal sort of way. It wasn't until just recently that I discovered that Valve actually doesn't favor machinima after reading the Pixel Eyes Productions blog. The section on this can be found here. Though it came as quite a shock to me, I also could understand where Valve was coming from. I mean, it's irritating enough as it is for me to have people ask me if they have permission to use Dr. Hax in their videos, even though I've never cared to begin with due to the characters being just inflated versions of existing Half-Life 2 characters. I could only imagine the stress of having to expand one's legal department and manage all the permissions of the hundreds wanting to do cyber puppet shows and then managing court dates to those who brushed too close to copyright.

In short, as far as I know, Valve has never cared what a YouTube nobody like me does with their engine as long as I'm not making a cent off the videos. It's free advertising and that doesn't bother them one bit. If you were a popular gaming company, this knowledge is pretty basic: court sucks and free advertising is awesome. That is why, due to my utmost respect for my favorite game company and the kindness of my heart, as faggoty as that sounds coming from a dude, I have decided not to produce the video for Machinima.com. It's going to remain being worked on for the free YouTube account just as the GMod Idiot Box has been. This is where the good news and the bad news comes in. The bad news ... for some of you ... is that I will be abandoning the effort to make the video widescreen while still using a CRT monitor. The good news is that I can begin production right away without busting my ass trying to seek out permission rights and adhering to guidelines.

Looks like we're back to the way things were and honestly, that's a huge relief for me and probably for a lot of you as well. Well, hopefully soon I'll have a decent name for the project too.

  2. It's good to see you use the free Youtube one. For me, when people start lopping off chunks of their work just to be able to get under the bar needed for their work to be paid for, it's a little saddening. Sure, people can't put food on the table with free YT videos, but to see a creative form turn from "doing it for laughs" to "doing it for profit" usually means forced updates and lack of 'passion' for the work.

  3. I find this whole thing a dick in a box situation. Im he thought was gonna be cool to get paid, hence present box. But found out the this is wasnt what he wanted, hence a dick. But at least you were able to walk away from machinima and do what you normally do. happy for you man :D

  4. Aha great. Who couldn't live without 4:3? I always did wonder why that aspect ratio was used. I never suspected the use of a CRT as they tend to mess with peoples' eyes. They sure did give me double vision.

It's kind of sad I guess that VALVe doesn't like this Machinima craze too much but at least they're not busting the doors down of every Youtube "nobody" and demanding compensation for any reason they can think of.

I guess we're lucky Youtube doesn't pay the people who give them so many views and so much advertising revenue.

  11. I was a little worried about change (chaaaange!!!!) to your style and output if you started down the Machinima road. Worried about you making concessions and changes based on what other people think. Your stuff has a great style I am happy to see not change. That's aside from all that technical stuff.

And I also agree with your reasoning too, aside from my own selfish desire to just enjoy your work as it is.

    Keep it up!
